Black Background Portraits

Dear Moose, I recently got my Nikon D5100 and I would like to know how to shoot portraits with black backgrounds without using black colored fabric.

When there is no light in the background, it becomes darks. Try to get a far distance between the shooting object and the background. Also use an external light source direct to the object from the side when shooting (flash light recommended) and turn off your pop-up flash on your camera. If you don't have a way to trigger your flash, try to make the environment as dark as possible. Then use a long shutter speed like 5-10 seconds and trigger your flash light manually during that shutter speed. You may have to calculate the aperture and ISO to use the the flash (flash should come with a chart). I hope this helps.
  • Can you recommend a setting for aperture and ISO? Thank you!
