Within the past year or so, my D3100 has begun frequently failing to shoot when the shutter button is pressed. Regardless of the mode (M/A/S) or lens, it will often do nothing. Manual or automatic focus doesn't matter (I use back-button focusing).

Sometimes, if I hold the button down for 10-20 seconds, it will may finally work.

It -seems- to happen more frequently in lower light situations (although I'm not sure), but even if that's the case, it would think that it should still take the shot, especially in Manual mode.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, I suspect this a problem with my shutter, but wanted to see if any other ideas came up, or tips on how to fix it!

Not long ago my camera started doing this, then the mirror got permanently stuck open and I had to give it a nudge with a cotton bud to get it back in position.

Now the problems have started again. Every time I take a photo I line up the image, then when I press the shutter the image 'jumps' to the right. The resulting image taken then cuts off the left side of my composition.

I have had to resort to anticipating this and lining the shot up left of where I want it to be, to mitigate against the shift.

Any suggestions much appreciated, camera repair shops will charge more than the camera is worth!

Thanks, Kate

I am considering buying a Nikon Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.4G for my D3100, based on the recommendation of a friend. I take pictures of children and adults in classrooms, usually with florescent lighting, and various levels of natural light through windows. My director is looking for the classic "bokeh" for photos used for promotional purposes, hence the f/1.4G. I noticed your recommendation of the 50mm f/1.8G or 35mm f/1.8G. Now I'm not sure. The price points there are certainly better. What do you think?
