Lens and settings for outside wedding

edited July 2015 Posted in » Nikon D3100 Forum
I have a D3100 with the 18-55mm and 55-300mm lens. Which lens and which settings should I use for outside wedding photos to get the fuzzy background? Also, which settings do I change to if the wedding goes inside?

Neither lens is ideal for the fuzzy background, but the longer you can get the focal length the better. If you're outdoors and can stand back, try using the 55-300mm with the focal length over 80mm or so, and a fairly wide open aperture. Watch out you don't overdo it, because depth of field can be so shallow that your subject will not all be in focus.

Watch out for blown highlights on a wedding dress. You may need to underexpose if the dress is brighter than the surrounding areas.
