Pictures of snow with kit lens

Just got my Nikon D3200 for my birthday (upgraded from a Fujifilm Finepix). I live in Alaska with snow and northern lights. I have thousands of pictures of the northern lights with the old camera. Just took northern lights pictures with the Nikon last night, and I need a little help with settings to use when it's actively snowing and when it's not.
