File Numbering System

Is there any logical reason why the file numbering system on my "new" Canon 60D should start at over 2700?

    Hi there.
In your set up menu, you have the file numbering system set to continuous. This means that your last used card had reached 2699. Your next card would start at 2700.
You can choose the options 'auto reset' or 'manual reset'.
Beware, if you have filenames in use where you store them and you use 'auto reset' there is a danger of overwriting them, although you should receive a prompt first. Hope this helps.

This is a supposedly a brand new, out of the box camera with a new memory card.

Oh, well that's my advice up the creek then! Short answer - I don't know. I suggest you take it back to the store. It should still be under warranty if it's new.
