Can Only Shoot in Black and White

Hello all. I'm pretty new to this camera thing. Sure I've used one, but they were just point and shoot. My problem is that I can only shoot in black and white in the M,A,S and P modes. Does anyone what steps I need to take to change that?

Thanks in advance for any help. I'm sure it will be the first of many questions on my road to learning about my camera.

    I use a Nikon D5100. On that press the I button and with the arrow keys select Set Picture Control by pressing OK (it is located on the lower right corner on the LCD).
    You have probably selected MC (monochrome). Set this back to SD (standard). You will shoot in color again.
