Exposure Compensation Curves

Can you share experiences with exposure compensation curves?
I have the feeling that my D5100 has in low-light situations the tendency to slightly underexpose.
What is the better method; adjusting exposure (after test shot) before you take the picture or
manipulating with exposure compensation curves on the computer?

Since I'm an old film guy, it's always best to get the correct exposure with the camera. Post-camera editing should be the last resort in my opinion. The beauty of digital is that you have instant feedback and you can make the necessary adjustments on the fly.
