Color Saturation

I just bought a D5100 to replace an older Pentax istd, but I'm concerned as the color is not nearly as vivid as the Pentax. I know that can be adjusted in software, but I would rather not have to edit every picture. Can you tell me if there is a way other than the vivid setting that I can make the colors pop more?
