Filming with the D3100

I realize that the D3100 isn't the best camera to film video with, but I'm interested in getting a better idea of what type of lenses (or which in particular) would produce the best, crisp-looking film. I've also been deciding whether to buy a 35mm or 50mm lens. How would the film quality look on that compared to the 18-55mm that the D3100 came with? Thanks in advance.

  • All of your shots will look cleaner and more crisp when shot with a prime lens as opposed to a zoom lens. I have the 18-55mm lens too. Unfortunately with a maximun aperture of between 3.5 to 5.6, it is not a "fast lens" like you'd get with a prime lens like a 50mm 1.8 which would also give you a much better depth-of-field.

Anyone have any further tips on this? I am a bit confused over the controls. It seems it all just goes to auto ref aperture etc. However, the manual seems to suggest that the AE/AF-L can be used to set/lock aperture etc? I tried this but it still just seems to fly on auto? Any pointers? Cheers!
