Tamron 75-300mm LD vs the Canon EF 70-300mm IS

Would you recommend the Tamron AF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 LD lens? How does this lens differ from the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens? I am currently using the Canon EFS 55-250mm. I want to get better zoom. Thanks!

  • Howdy @_bethany - Lets first look at the added zoom. A 250mm telephoto reach will give you an effective field of view comparable to 400mm. A 300mm telephoto reach will give you an effective field of view comparable to 480mm. Honestly, the difference between 400mm and 480mm is hardly noticeable.

If you need something with more zoom, it would be better to invest in a lens with a maximum reach between 400mm to 500mm. This will give you an effective field of view between 640mm to 800mm when mounted to your T2i. The difference between 400mm and 640mm or 800mm is much more noticeable.

As for the difference between the two lenses, the Canon EF 70-300mm IS (see here) is in fact sharper and quicker to focus compared to the Tamron 75-300mm LD (see here). The Canon also comes with image stabilization (IS) which is extremely useful with longer telephoto lenses.

Hope that all makes sense and happy shooting! :)
