Best Settings for taking moving still pictures

Hi to all, I am new to this forum site and new to photography with an DSLR camera. I've had the Nikon D3100 since Christmas and I can not get the hang of taking moving pictures; they keep coming out blurry. I have a 18-55mm lens and I was wondering which would be the best settings.
I have referred to the manual but do not understand some of the terminology. Hope someone can help, thanks.

I'd have a go with a fast shutter speed or on the command dial turn it to the sport setting. I've used this to take pictures of my dog when he's in mid run and have got fairly good results with that.
