in auto mode busy icon comes up and no pictures taken

I just bought my new canon 550D with lens kit 18-55mm. First and foremost I am new to photography. I set my settings to auto and when I pressed the shutter fully down the busy icon comes up and no pictures where taken. Can you please tell me how to set my camera properly?

    Basic questions: do you have a memory card in there? If not, put one in and try again. If you have a memory card in there you may want to try to first copy all your old content onto a computer and then use the T2i menu's to format the SD card and try again.

    @jehtro_17: Also please please please read the manual that comes with the camera. The manual is your god, when you have a device you are not sure of. :-)
    You will be surprised when you dig out lots of hidden treasures from the manual.
