Photos in the dark

edited June 2012 Posted in » Nikon D5100 Forum
Hi, wonder if you can help. I'm trying to take pictures at night in my garden. My D5100 won't take any pics.

Is this because the built in flash is not enough?

If so, can you recommend a flash for beginners?

Thanks.

    Duggu,

The camera won't take pictures because it can't focus on any thing in dark surroundings. Maybe you need to set the assist light focus to "ON" so it will light up the subject and help
the camera focus. Use the built in flash.
    Have fun.

Duggu, what are you trying to capture; people, scenery, light trails? If you can add some info I might be able to suggest some settings. To start off, put your lens on manual focus and try a shot.

It took me a few days to learn this one. Take the cover off the lens! Camera won't shoot if it just sees black.

duggu because it's dark you will need to make your camera focus on something. If your camera can't focus it won't take a photo on Auto focus mode. Best bet it use a torch to light something up like a tree, focus, turn your lens too MF, turn torch off and take your photo.
