Good camera setup for shooting fireworks

I had a hard time setting up my camera for capturing fireworks last time and ended up using video mode to record the fireworks. Please help me setup my camera specifically in shooting fireworks. Also consider that I am only using 18-55mm lens with no tripod.

You will definitely need to use a tripod or other means of steadying the camera, as its impossible to hold it steady enough for the time required to get an image unless you want to create some 'special-effects' shots.

I guess I really need a tripod if I want to achieve the shoot I wanted.
