Bulb mode versus 30" exposure

edited April 2012 Posted in » Nikon D3100 Forum
What are the differences between "bulb" mode and using a shutter speed of 30" in Shutter priority mode? I'm assuming that "bulb" mode exposes for as long as you keep holding the release button and a shutter speed of 30" exposes for 30 seconds after pressing the shutter button. Am I correct?

Howdy @simonwcv - Yes, you're correct. For most subjects and scenes you won't need a shutter speed slower than 30", however, there are creative effects that can be captured with longer exposures...like star trails (at night) or smooth/silky oceans (during the day using a dark neutral density filter). Happy shooting! :)
