Photographing flowing lava from a boat

I'm going to Hawaii and will be doing a boat tour to see and photograph lava flowing into the ocean. It will be before and during sunrise, so a mixture of dark and dawn light. The boat gets pretty close to flows, and there is lots of steam. Have the 18-55mm and 70-300mm lenses. Tripod is available, but I can't see using it much in a boat. I know I will have to rely on VR lots! Any advice on settings would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
