How do you get the LCD view finder to where you can use it to view the subject to take a picture?

If you mean how do you use the LCD as a viewfinder in place of the optical viewfinder, you switch to Live view.

Be aware that when you do this, some camera functions change. Live View uses a different auto focus system, and some of the settings are different.

The AF in Live View is very accurate in good light, a little less so in bad light, and less good at following motion. It's great for fine manual focusing.

How do you get live view?

Live view is opened by pushing the "LV" button on the back of the camera. When you do this, the camera's mirror is raised, and the regular viewfinder goes dark.

The shooting menu choices will be different, and the focus operation will be different as well. If you have your lens stopped down, the view may be dark, because Live view uses the last setting before it's opened, but all exposure controls will work correctly. Do not confuse the automatic exposure the Live view itself uses with the exposure that is used for a picture.

If for some reason you did not receive the instruction book for this camera, I strongly suggest you visit the Nikon website, where it can be downloaded free as a PDF file. If you put it on the computer, you will be able to consult it as needed. It's very difficult to get the best out of this machine without it.
