Is Nikon or Canon best for portraits?

edited December 2014 Posted in » General Discussion
Hi,
I'm a wanting to update my camera and I just don't know which one to buy. I am starting photography and want to produce professional quality portrait photos. My price range is up to $1500. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Either canon or Nikon is fine as they are both good brands. Thank you.

    What's your current camera?

At that budget, you're probably looking at an entry level gear.

Nikon versus Canon is not an argument that anyone can win. Nikon users will side with Nikon, and Canon users will side with Canon. So from a Nikon user perspective, I'd say get a D3200 kit with 18-55mm lens. Then also get a 50mm f/1.8G and a SB-500 speedlight.

Hi, I currently use a nikon D3100 with the kit lens. I find that the photos I take just are not sharp and don't look professional, so I am wanting to buy a better camera to get better pictures. My friend has the Canon Mark 111, but I can't afford that so I'm looking for the next best thing. :) Thank you.

Hate to break this to you but the problem is not your camera. Your D3100 is more than capable of sharp "professional-looking" photos.
Are you shooting in Auto or any of the Scene modes? Are you letting the camera decide where to focus with Auto-Area AF? If so, then getting a high-end camera body will do nothing for your pictures.
