How to make flash work in daylight

edited June 2014 Posted in » Nikon D3100 Forum
Hi,

I tried photographing an insect in the daylight using macro mode. The insect was in amongst some large plants so I got in as close as I could. The photo I took came out a bit too dark so I tried to pop the flash up but nothing happened.
I looked at the flash settings and it was set to ‘Auto’. The only other options were ‘Auto with Red-Eye Reduction’ and ‘No Flash’.
Is there any way to enable the flash to work in daylight whilst using macro mode?

I appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks,
Rachel

It’s important to note that using any of the Auto Scene modes doesn’t do any magic that makes your gear suddenly suitable for that particular scene. The Macro (or close-up) just uses your lens’ maximum aperture. Do the same by going into either A (Aperture priority) or M (Manual) and set the aperture to as large as possible. Press the flash button and the flash will fire in either of those modes.
  • Thanks for your reply, ohyeahar. I'll do as you suggested, thanks.
