How to shoot into a sunlit window

Hi Moose, I really appreciate what you are doing here, your site is so encouraging. I am trying to shoot a picture of custom made drapery against a sunlit window. The outside light coming in from the window seems to blow out any drapery color and when I use my flash, it puts too much shine on the drapes. Short of shooting when it's dark and leaving the shutter open a few seconds, what can I do? I have the Canon T2i with the 18-55mm, 55-250mm and a 50mm lenses. I have had better luck shooting without the sunlight coming through the window, but this needs to be a daytime shot. Thanks so much.
