Photographing Stars

edited November 2013 Posted in » Nikon D3100 Forum
This is my first attempt at photographing stars. Here are my settings: 18mm, f/5.6, shutter speed 30 seconds, ISO 1600, tripod and remote shutter release. Turned out ok, but I need to work on focus!

Great result for the first attempt. I liked all the images. I would love to try this, but I don't have a tripod.

I'm yet to try a night shot but I would imagine ISO 1600 is too grainy. 400 might be better with a longer shutter speed, say a couple of variations from 60 to 120 seconds. As to focus, I would select manual and use infinity, but all of that is just a guess on my part.

Here's my star photo: http://365project.org/carolpre/365/2013-08-31. The settings were 18mm, f/3.5, ISO 800 at 30 seconds. When spring finally hits here and I can go back out at night and not freeze. I'm going to shorten the shutter speed a little because I think 30 seconds was just a little too long. If you look closely, the stars look a little oblong from the movement of the earth.
