Zoom Lens with Widest Fstop

edited December 2012 Posted in » Canon T3i Forum
I'd like to move from a prime lens to zoom lens, but I'm looking for one that allows wide fstop and has a focal length of approximately 35-200mm. I'm also considering thirrd party lenses (I'm using Canon T3i with 50mm f/1.8).

    Greetings Athena,

In your message you do not specify the specific applications you have in mind for the lens you are looking for.

For the sake of discussion, I will assume you are looking for a great all-around lens, and given that you want it to replace prime lenses, I will also assume that you are looking for great image quality as well.

If price is no object, here is a great zoom lens featuring a wide aperture:

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II USM. The older, non-IS version is cheaper. The field of view is too tight for indoor family gatherings, but this lens is great for outdoors sport action.

    Sigma also has a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens:

Otherwise, if you do not plan to shoot wildlife or sports, the Canon EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 IS USM is a versatile lens offering very high image quality, perfect for family gatherings and weddings. I purchased mine used for $800 and I am extremely satisfied with it:

Please note that the 70-200mm zoom lenses mentioned above weigh in excess of 3 lbs each. I would advise you use a monopod or tripod should you pick one of those, for two reasons. First, at 200mm, it's easier to get a sharp picture when your camera is stabilized, and also hand holding a 4lbs camera and lens combo for a long period of time can be uncomfortable. The 17-55mm weights 1.4 lbs, so it's much better in that respect.

Since investing in any wide aperture zoom lens represents a significant investment, you could rent the lens for a weekend and test it before you commit to a purchase. Specialized camera stores around here rent lenses for $35 for the weekend.
