Camera Won't Autofocus When Switching Between Different Colors

I am trying to take two dimensional pictures of flat clothing that are lying on a single colored brown textured fabric background. When I switch between taking photos of different color items, (one is a navy shirt, and the next is hot pink hoodie sweatshirt) the autofocus will work on the first item, but not the second. Do I need to change the settings when switching between different colored items? Is there an ideal setting for taking photos of clothing? The clothing is lying on a board at a 30 angle, and I am using softboxes with compact fluorescent light bulbs as our light source. I could really use the help to take these photos to make them stand out as they are used for our website to illustrate the products that we sell.
