Motor racing pic settings.

Hi to all.

What a great forum!

I am a complete beginner, and I'm looking to purchase a D5100 for use with portraits, motor racing and car show images. Some of these I need at high resolution to later transfer to a laser engraving machine.

I also wish to start using DSLR's as a hobby, and after researching I'm hoping that the D5100 will suit me as a beginner.

My first question is I am attending a race meeting in three weeks time, which isn't long enough to be sure of getting nice photos unless the camera is okay in auto mode initially. Can anyone suggest some basic starting settings and setups for stationary car pictures at 8 meters and moving car pictures at 50-60 meters?

I am looking at the D5100 which includes 18-55mm VR and 55-300mm VR lenses.

I know I'm starting at the deep end, but any assistance would be appreciated, even if its just "Stay in Auto Mode".

I did search the forum for this and found help for motor racing pics with the D3100, which I don't know if it is relevant or not.

Thanks in advance,

Superoo.
