My Nikon won't let me change the White Balance or Exposure!!

Sorry, very long question. I've only had my camera for about a year and I'm 16. I just got done reading (yes, reading) a photography book called Rick Sammon's Field Guide to Digital Photography and he kept talking about changing the exposure. I know how to on my laptop when I'm editing, but I don't know how to on my camera. I got a feel for it but whenever I go to click on "White Balance" underneath the green tab of shooting settings (something like that, sorry I'm clueless) it says it's not available. Please help!

    You can only change white balance in the manual modes (M A S and P).
